Plant a Perennial Garden

Have you heard the terms annual and perennial? This is one way gardeners like to separate plants into categories. This is like saying something is planted in the spring or fall, since most plants have a season (or two seasons) they prefer better than others. If a plant is an annual, it means that you will need to plant it every year, or at least every two years. If a plant is perennial, it can remain in the ground to be continually harvested longer than that.

So, why does this matter?

One of the biggest reasons is that as each year goes by and the plant is not uprooted or taken out of the ground, the plant’s root system grows larger and deeper, and breaks further down into the soil, breaking up the tougher layers. Similar to native plants, this means they can more easily find water and nutrients. If you want to make this your project, look at the resources to check out what perennial plants you can grow. There are many  perennial plants out there, so find some you think will work for your area and get growing!
