You might want to revisit <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/herofortheplanet.org\/mnquest\/uncover\/our-history\/\">Our History<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/herofortheplanet.org\/mnquest\/explore\/human-impacts\/\">Human Impacts<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to make connections.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>In what ways might you be able to solve the problem, and improve the health of the watershed and the habitat of your species?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Gather Evidence<\/h3>\t\t\n\t\t<h3>Site Project<\/h3>\t\t\n\t\t\t<ul>\n<li>If you are doing a site project, investigate the site for human impacts that could be harmful to your animal species. If appropriate for identifying a problem, repeat relevant water investigation procedures described in Our Water Health (On-site Observations, Water Quality Tests, Macro-invertebrate Survey).<\/li>\n<li>Read or talk with people about activities on and in the water. Find out how the community uses the water and surrounding land, and what people might be doing to care for the site. <\/li>\n<li>Identify which of these activities could be harming your species and the site itself.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t<h3>Watershed Project<\/h3>\t\t\n\t\t\t<ul>\n<li>If you are doing a watershed project, find out how your site has been used by people. Talk with people or read about activities in your area that might be harmful to the water and watershed. Even though these activities are not happening in or next to the water, they could still affect it by harming the water runoff which flows through the watershed into the water ecosystem.<\/li>\n<li>Investigate the site for human impacts that could be affecting the sprinkler, rain, or snow water runoff. If appropriate for identifying a problem, collect runoff water from the parking lot, sidewalk or road. Repeat relevant water investigation procedures described in Our Water Health (Water Quality Tests, Macro-invertebrate Survey).<\/li>\n<li>Ask community members and water experts whether or not there have been any community-wide efforts for people to improve the health of the local water ecosystem. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>State the Problem<\/h3>\t\t\n\t\t\t<p>Based on your findings, identify and describe one problem that is either making your water site unhealthy for your species or making your watershed unhealthy for wildlife.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Explain the evidence you found for this problem. You will be designing a project to help solve this problem.<\/p>\n<h3>Match the Solution<\/h3>\t\t\n\t\t\t<p>What would need to happen to solve the problem at your site or in your watershed? What do you want the project to accomplish?<\/p>\n<h3>Criteria for the Solution<\/h3>\t\t\n\t\t\t<p>These are requirements (non-negotiables) to designing a project that will help solve the problem.\u00a0 What does the project need to do? Have you gotten all of the required permissions to be able to do a project on this site?\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Constraints for the Solution<\/h3>\t\t\n\t\t\t<p>These are limitations to solving the problem. What are the limits to your project? (examples: time, cost, materials, type of project)<\/p>\n<h3>Project Ready!<\/h3>\t\t\n\t\t\t<p>You are ready to research project ideas to find one that can solve the problem you defined!<\/p>\n<h3>Discuss<\/h3>\t\t\n\t\t\t<p>Revisit &#8220;Human Impacts&#8221; found in EXPLORE. What human activities around your school, home, or community might help or harm the health of your river, lake, or wetland? Make a list that includes the information such as the location and source of each problem.<\/p>\n<h3>Decide<\/h3>\t\t\n\t\t\t<p>Evaluate the problems and decide which one you can do with your resources and time. Choose one problem to be the focus of your project. Once you have chosen it, write a description of the problem and explain why it was chosen.<\/p>\n\t\t<h5>\neducator note<\/h5>\t\t\n\t\t\t<p>In addition to the action steps described on this page, students could:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gather evidence<\/strong> for the source of the water problem. For example, if the water in your parking lots has high phosphates and nitrates, what are possible human activities that might be causing these high chemical levels?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Write a news\/opinion article or create a visual graphic<\/strong> that addresses: \u201cWhy should we help improve the water quality at this location?\u201d or \u201cWhy should we help [animal species] in this water ecosystem?\u201d Include the human-related cause(s) of the problem, the effects of the problem on the animal and\/or the watershed, and why you have chosen this problem as the focus of your project. <\/p>\n\t<p>Nice work!
