Here are a few questions to get you thinking.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How are places around and in rivers, lakes, or wetlands the same or different?<\/li>\n<li>What kinds of plants and animals live in and around your water? What did you see?<\/li>\n<li>What kind of development is around your water?<\/li>\n<li>What signs did you notice of human impact (positive and negative)?<\/li>\n<li>What are your favorite, and least favorite, experiences and places around your water? Why?<\/li>\n<li>What do you know about other lakes, rivers, and wetlands around Minnesota?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>\n\t\tWhat do you already KNOW about your lake or river from observations, experiences, and prior knowledge?\n\t<\/h3>\n<h3>\n\t\tWhat do you NEED to know to be able to help your lake or river?\n\t<\/h3>\n<h3>\n\t\tWhat ideas do you have for what you could DO to help your lake or river?\n\t<\/h3>\n\t<h3>Questions to Consider<\/h3>\t\t\n\t\t\t<p>Think about your observations and personal experiences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brainstorm<\/strong> a group or individual list for <strong>K, N, and D<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><b>K<\/b>: What do you already\u00a0<b>KNOW<\/b>\u00a0from your observations, experiences, and background knowledge?<\/p>\n<p><b>N<\/b>: What do you\u00a0<b>NEED<\/b> to know to be able to effectively help your local river or lake? (Answer with open-ended questions starting with who, what, when, where, how, or what if. )<\/p>\n<p><b>D<\/b>: What ideas do you have for what you could\u00a0<b>DO\u00a0<\/b>to help your local river or lake?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\t\t<h5>\t\n\teducator note<\/h5>\t\t\n\t\t\t\n<p><strong>Create a KND chart <\/strong>about water ecosystem health, and how and why to improve and protect it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>K: KNOW. \u00a0What do we KNOW from observations, experiences, and background knowledge?\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>N: NEED TO KNOW. What do we NEED to know to be able to understand the problem and help design a solution? Write these in open-ended questions starting with &#8220;who, what, why, how, what if, when, which.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>D: DO. What might we DO to help improve the health of our community&#8217;s water ecosystem?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Suggested instructional strategy:<\/strong> First, students write individually, then share and edit in small groups, and finally share out with full class and build a class chart to post as a dynamic reference chart throughout the Quest. An additional step could be for students to categorize the questions into topics about the water ecosystem. With your guidance, a final goal might be to align questions with the UNCOVER and EXPLORE topics.
