You have also learned about:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The history of the longleaf pine;<\/li>\n<li>The longleaf habitat types and what plant and animal species live in those habitats;<\/li>\n<li>The role that fire and the regeneration cycle plays in the longleaf pine ecosystem;<\/li>\n<li>Some of the pressures and disruptions affecting the longleaf ecosystem.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The next step is to identify the problems facing the species you chose to focus on, and define one problem that you can address.<\/p>\n\t<h3>Discuss<\/h3>\t\t\n\t\t\t<p>Think about what you have learned about the species chose to focus on. What challenges is that species facing? What are the root causes of those challenges? What are challenges that you can realistically address?<\/p>\n\t<h3>Decide<\/h3>\t\t\n\t\t\t<p>Based on your discussion, choose one problem facing your species and the longleaf pine ecosystem that you can realistically do something about. Develop a problem statement that clearly states the problem and why it&#8217;s a problem.<\/p>\n\t<p>Nice work! Specification of constraints includes consideration of scientific principles and other relevant knowledge that are likely to limit possible solutions. <strong>(MS-ETS1-1)<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><strong>(MS-ETS1-1)<\/strong> Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is likely your class has identified many problems through the course of the Uncover and Explore sections. Guide students to find small problems within the larger ones.\u00a0 Remind them to be as specific as possible when identifying problems.\u00a0 Begin now to set them up to design a SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Timely) solution.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Options to have students brainstorm in the Hero Journal first, then work in small groups to share ideas before sharing with the whole class.<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>KND:<\/strong> Individually or as a class review and update the KND chart.\u00a0 What questions have we answered? What do we still need or want to find out about the llp ecosystem?\u00a0 Now that we know so much about it, do we have any new ideas about what we might DO to help the llp forest or the species within it?\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Defining the problem:<\/strong> Set students up for a SMART solution.\u00a0 [Remember that big problems are usually made up of lots of little ones]\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><strong>Brainstorm<\/strong><strong>:\u00a0<\/strong> What are the big and little problems we have discovered related to the llp ecosystem and your\/our species?\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"3\">Can these problems be grouped into categories?\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"3\">Is there a BIG problem that some of the little ones fall under?<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"3\">Have we named SPECIFIC problems or just general ones?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><strong>Narrow<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> Which of the problems might have a manageable or measurable outcome?\u00a0<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><strong>Be realistic<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> Which of the problems identified might have a solution WE could start?\u00a0 Remember we aren&#8217;t going to bring back 87 million acres of llp forest next week!\u00a0 But we can begin to help to make the environment more healthy for some species of plants and animals right now.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Discussion:<\/b>\u00a0Help students to understand that the problems they identify are all <i>real <\/i>but some of them are more fundamental to the loss of llp habitat than others. Finding solutions that address both root causes and symptoms of the root cause can be beneficial. Consider using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/medicare\/provider-enrollment-and-certification\/qapi\/downloads\/fivewhys.pdf\">5 Whys Tool for Root Cause Analysis<\/a> to help students uncover root causes.
