the basis of the test results, in order to improve it. <strong>(MS-ETS1-4)<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><strong>(MS-ETS1-4)<\/strong> Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">There are systematic processes for evaluating solutions with respect to how well they meet the criteria and constraints of a problem. <strong>(MS-ETS1-2), (MS-ETS1-3)<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><strong>(MS-ETS1-2)<\/strong> Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><strong>(MS-ETS1-3)<\/strong> Analyze data from tests to determine similarities and differences among several design solutions to identify the best characteristics of each that can be combined into a new solution to better meet the criteria for success.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Sometimes parts of different solutions can be combined to create a solution that is better than any of its predecessors. <strong>(MS-ETS1-3)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Models of all kinds are important for testing solutions. <strong>(MS-ETS1-4)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Criteria and Constraints:<\/strong> In order to select or develop a project, students must understand that they are trying to solve a specific problem and that not all solutions will do this.\u00a0 While raising gopher tortoises may look fun, it might not fit the time constraint of the project.\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><strong>Criteria:<\/strong> Using white board or poster paper write out the problem they have identified and explain that the criteria for the solution is that it should address THIS problem as directly as possible (Give an example &#8211; If the problem we identify is that people suppress fire in the llp ecosystem then any solution should probably address people&#8217;s attitudes about fires).\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><strong>Constraints:<\/strong> Explain that constraints are limits. Under the problem list any constraints that they\/you can identify.\u00a0 (for example, it has to be completed by _____, it must fit in the school property (our site), it can&#8217;t involve live animals, etc. )<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Review the Do list from KND.<\/strong> Did any students have ideas for projects they would like to present in addition to the Project Hero project ideas?<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Pros &amp; Cons:<\/strong> students select at least two project ideas to evaluate using pros and cons.\u00a0 Consider evaluating on:\n<ul>\n<li>Effectiveness of addressing the problem we identified (Criteria)<\/li>\n<li>Could be designed to fit our needs (Constraints)<\/li>\n<li>Do-ability by this class.<\/li>\n<li>Meets the needs of the people who care about the site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Research Jigsaw:<\/strong> As individuals or pairs students read about one project then report back to the larger group.\u00a0 Each student\/pair should do the following:\n<ul>\n<li>Summarize the project (3 sentences)<\/li>\n<li>Answer questions (use these or another set that you determine)\n<ul>\n<li>How effective is this solution at solving the problem we identified?\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>How would this solution address the needs and desires of the site owner or people who care about this site?<\/li>\n<li>How does this solution stand up to our constraints? <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Visual presentations:<\/strong> Students create and share visual presentations that address the questions above.\u00a0 Could be informational or persuasive.\n<ul>\n<li>Poster or digital infographic, multi-flow thinking map, other visual representation<\/li>\n<li>An<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ignitetalks.io\/\"> Ignite Talks<\/a><\/li>\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pechakucha.com\/\">Pecha Kucha Talk<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Discussion:<\/strong> After research or presentations engage students in discussion.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Is there just ONE solution that fits our criteria or more than one?\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">If there aren&#8217;t any that fit exactly, could we combine elements of two or more different projects to fit our criteria?\u00a0<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Are there other ideas that you came up with in your DO list that might be helpful for us to consider now?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t<h5><a href=\"\/longleaf\/solve\/design\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Time to Design your Project<\/a><\/h5>\t\t\n\t\t\t<a href=\"\/longleaf\/solve\/design\/\" target=\"_self\" role=\"button\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNext \n\t\t\t<\/a>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Solve Project Ideas Based on your research of the longleaf ecosystem, you probably have a good sense of what your plants or animal species needs to survive and thrive.
